Using 80⁄20 and similar extrusions
Various people including David Orton recommend a non-ferrous cutting blade for the miter saw. A wood blade will work in a pinch if you go slowly though. Make sure to clamp all extrusions before cutting. I bought a Dewalt miter saw clamp deciding not to spend the extra money for the more expensive clamps which have a quick release. The clamps are a bit fiddly, and at least on my 10” DeWalt (DW703) the left-side clamp is not usable with anything narrower than a 2x4. I’m improvising by clamping off the bed of the saw, which seems to work OK so far.
80⁄20 and drawer slides
- GeorgeRa has a nice design using Accuride sliders and Southco latches although he’s using 15-series 80⁄20 rather than the 10-series I’m using. There are a variety of options for different drawer front thicknesses, but face to latch is ~1” for most. M1-25-62-18 might work, but it’s stainless steel only, and $60+.
- another option might be aluminum angle instead of 1050 - that could be machined to an appropriate depth for the latches
- challenge with these latches is if I want a board above to make a step - in that case there’s no space for a southco latch to attach

- 1515 80⁄20 kitchen cabinet with details, using plyboo fronts and Blum slides (similar to Ikea Maximera)
- expensive, but assembly looks pretty easy and flexible/adjustable ($70+ for Blum Tandembox from cabinetparts.com)
standard 100 lb slides are 1.75” tall, so need to be attached at least .875” above floor level. This means double-high extrusions, whether 15-series or 10-series
